Project Experience of Scott Kevin Jones
Pepsi Center - Denver, Colorado
Architect of Record: HOK Sport + Venue + Event
Structural Engineer: Thornton Thomasetti
MEP Engineer: M.E. Engineers
Opening Day - August 1999
Below is the arena near completion, with yours truly in front holding a roll of shop drawings.
The floors of the Pepsi Center are gorgeous quarried tile. The lobbies have an intricate pattern that feeds from the complex geometry of the bowl and the angular entry lobbies. The concourses are also tile with a simpler pattern.
Patrons enter at service level and come up escalators or grand stairs to the Main Concourse. Overlooking that is a Club balcony which can be seen speckled with blue lights in the top right.
The club restaurant includes a fireplace open on all sides.
Opening night was a Celine Dion concert. In the background to the right you can see the "Pepsi Ball" which was one of the first times I encountered that rainbow paint which has wide color shift depending on from what angle you view it. That ball raises up on a cloud of steam and has glowing pinholes of light radiating in all directions - this is activated when the home team scores a goal.
The ribbon cutting ceremony included a balloon drop in the main lobby - red white and blue balloons in a good approximation of the Pepsi Logo.
The avalanche of balloons fell on the dignitaries on stage and rolled off the back of the platform. within a very short time the three primary escalators had conveyed almost all of them up to the Main Concourse.
After the opening concert, there was a party in the club retaurant. That is me in the white shirt, with Jeff Nigh our site rep and one of the arena staff. In the background is a group of teens from Columbine High School which had had a pretty rough year.
