Project Experience of Scott Kevin Jones

Arena Am Ostbahnhof - Berlin, Germany

Architect of Record: HOK Sport, Gmbh

Associate Architect: JSK

Structural Engineer: LAP

MEP Engineer: INTEG

Opening Day – anticipated 2008

The most interesting thing about this project will be learning how architecture is practiced in another country. Germany is clearly ahead of us in sustainability issues, and I was excited to learn we will be required to incorporate more sustainable elements in this design than in the buildings in the US.

Berlin has a wonderful public transportation system. As patrons arrive from two nearby train stations they will approach the North facade which is a curve of sweeping glass. A grand lobby will greet them as they enter low and come up escalators or the grand stairs to the Main Concourse.

The prow of the roof is an architectural feature and will be dramatically lit. There will be a green roof of some sort, though it remains to be seen whether it will be an "intensive" or "extensive" construction.

The South end contains balconies and terraces.

The interior will most likely have a continuous ribbon board similar to the Glendale Arena. Luxury Suites will be available on two levels.
